Cuba Fly Fishing - Jardines de la Reina

Two Liveaboard Yachts for the 2026 Season

Jardines de la Reina—Spanish for “Gardens of the Queen”—was named by Christopher Columbus and remains one of Cuba’s crown jewels for saltwater fly fishing. Located 60 to 80 miles off the country’s southern coast, this 840-square-mile marine sanctuary is strictly designated for catch-and-release fly fishing. More than 600 cays and islands form a pristine chain that resembles the Florida Keys of decades past, with vast, undisturbed flats, thriving mangroves, and an incredible variety of species. Minimal fishing pressure and a strong conservation focus make Jardines de la Reina one of the most productive and well-protected fisheries in the world. Guests stay aboard one of two liveaboards. Please note that Wi-Fi is not available onboard.

Jardines de la Reina

Jardines de la Reina's 600 cays and island resemble the Florida Keys.

Jardines de la Reina, Spanish for “Gardens of the Queen,” spans 840 square miles—an archipelago of more than 600 cays and islands as large as the Florida Keys. Its vast, undisturbed flats stretch for miles, offering a rare saltwater wilderness. Jardines de la Reina (JDR) is an exclusive marine park, not open to the public or outside operators. Only Avalon’s liveaboards are licensed to fish here, and no commercial fishing is allowed except for a limited lobster harvest. The result is one of the most pristine and lightly pressured saltwater fisheries in the world.

New for the 2026 Season

Access to Jardines de la Reina will be limited to just 16 anglers (8 skiffs) per week. This change enhances the guest experience while helping to preserve the fishery. Only one private liveaboard will operate each week throughout the archipelago, reducing fishing pressure and allowing greater flexibility to follow the best opportunities. The liveaboards will remain mobile, positioning guests where the fishing is most productive while minimizing impact on this delicate ecosystem.

Two exceptional liveaboards will host anglers in Jardines de la Reina for the 2026 season—one for peak season and another for low season.

Fly Fishing Cuba

Permit:  The ultimate flats challenge. Permit demand precise casting and nerves of steel. Peak fishing runs March through July, but permit are available year-round. Often found tailing in just one or two feet of water, many exceed 25 lbs. Jardines is one of the world’s most consistent permit fisheries, making it an excellent destination for pursuing a Grand Slam or Super Slam.

Tarpon Fishing - Jardines de la Reina

Fly Fishing Cuba

Tarpon:  Known locally as sábalo, tarpon are one of the main draws of Jardines. Fishing is best from February through late July, with April to July being prime for large fish. Anglers encounter baby tarpon (to 30 lbs), medium tarpon (30-80 lbs), and occasionally monsters over 100 lbs - with some pushing 200 lbs. Big tarpon are challenging and less common, but the chance to hook one is unforgettable.

Bonefish Fishing - Jardines de la Reina

Fly Fishing Cuba for bonefish in Jardines de la Reina.

Bonefish:  Bonefish are abundant year-round, cruising shallow flats from six inches to six feet deep. They prowl grass beds and sand flats in search of shrimp and crabs, often traveling in small schools. Jardines bonefish are hardy, tolerate low oxygen waters, and provide excellent sport throughout the day, with afternoons often being especially productive.
Grand Slams:  Jardines de la Reina is renowned for producing Grand Slams (tarpon, bonefish, and permit in a single day). The best window for Slams is April through July, when all three species are at their peak. Few fisheries worldwide match Jardines’ consistency in delivering Slams.

Other Species - Jardines de la Reina

Jardines de la Reina Species

Mutton Snapper: Mutton snapper are abundant in Jardines de la Reina (JDR). What makes this destination unique is that many are found and landed right on the flats—a true rarity in the fishing world. JDR is perhaps the only place on earth where anglers can consistently expect to catch mutton snapper in such shallow-water conditions.
Other species:  Anglers who wish to troll off the reef using plugs, bait, or even flies will encounter a diverse range of fish species. Species you may encounter include: various snappers, such as cubera snapper (large), groupers, Jack Crevalle, kingfish, albacore, wahoo, bonito, and large barracuda. The diversity is outstanding—one group of anglers recorded catching 25 different species in a single day while fishing off the reef.
