Mongolia Fly Fishing Trips

Mongolia, located in northern Asia, borders Russia to the north and China to the south. Its natural isolation, surrounded by the Altai Mountains to the west and the Gobi Desert to the south, has kept the country out of the Western spotlight for the past 70 years. It was not until 1990 that the first Western tourists began to arrive. Explore this enchanting and mysterious country, the homeland of Genghis Khan, and flyfish for Taimen, the world's largest salmonid.
Mongolia is the least densely populated country in the world. Outside of Ulaanbaatar, the capital city, this vast wilderness is sparsely inhabited by nomads living off the land, tending their cows, sheep, goats, yaks, and camels. There are no fences and very few roads; once you leave the city, the people you encounter will likely be upon horseback.

Taimen Fishing:

Mongolian taimen do not migrate to the ocean or large lakes; instead, they spend their entire life cycle in the rivers where they were born. These fish can live for nearly fifty years and can grow to over sixty inches in length. Their primary diet consists of smaller fish, and they respond well to well-presented streamers. However, taimen also often feed near the surface, hunting for small mammals and even ducklings. As a result, they aggressively strike skated or gurgling surface flies. When they do take the fly, taimen can be explosive, sometimes jumping completely out of the water when they strike.
