Aniak River Lodge - 2024 TRIP REPORT

Two Hosted Weeks - August 9-23, 2024
Aniak, Alaska

by Guy Schoenborn

My two hosted weeks on the Aniak this year were both quite good.

The week of August 9-16 was good for rainbow trout, dolly varden, grayling, sheefish, and pike. There were a few silvers caught, too. Bob Korose and Jim Trobaugh had a great time with pink wogs on silvers. They landed several and missed a lot of takes.

Laurie Woody landed a 25-plus-inch rainbow. Most of the group landed bows over 22 inches.

Mo Tidemanis landed four sheefish one morning on Clouser’s; one was a 40 incher.

We had heavy rain early in the week; it brought the river up over two feet and made the visibility about 10 inches. The guides know their beats so well that they were able to find rainbows, dollies, and graylings in good numbers, even with fair at best conditions.

The week of August 16-23 had good water conditions. The river dropped a couple of feet, and there was good visibility. The silvers moved in in big numbers. Don Arthur and Doug Riggs had 120 and 100 plus fish days. My wife Toni and I landed about 30 silvers one morning in a couple of hours. We could have caught more, but we decided we wanted to get some rainbows, dollies, and grayling, too.

Sam Crouser landed a stunning, colored-up 25-inch dolly.

Dave Moniz and I had an outstanding day on rainbows. We landed over a dozen between 20 and 25 inches. We had a double in the net—two rainbows over 22 inches.

Hot pink and purple/pink bunny leeches were the best flies for silvers. There were enough aggressive silvers around that wogs worked well. Most of the sheefish were caught on clouser minnows. For both weeks, beads were the ticket for rainbows, dollies, and grayling. King, chum, pink, and sockeye spawns were happening in both weeks. Flesh flies had good results for those wanting to target mostly rainbows.

Overall, we had two excellent weeks with a good mixed bag of fish. The Aniak is as good as it gets in Alaska.

If you want some of the best mousing in Alaska, we recommend the month of July.

Testimony:  “Best fishing ever. A great trip. Not only was the fishing great, the camp has been upgraded over the years. The cleanliness of the camp and rooms is appreciated. The amount of thought and attention to detail is quite evident. Everything I asked for, from fishing to the CPAP machine, was dealt with speed and efficiency. The food was great. The steak night was a treat. The guides are awesome, and the camp staff and Ian were great. Ben, Bruce, Taylor, Matt, and Eli went out of the way to make sure I had a great time with a lot of laughs. Thanks again to ARL for a week I will not forget.” - David Moniz
